*** Male or Female Puppy? ***
In recent years I have noticed a trend
of people looking for female puppies vs male puppies. I'd like to take a minute to point out some differences
in the two sexes that most people don't think about right away. In a dog pack, it is the alpha female that "rules"
the group. Females tend to be more independent, stubborn (gotta love 'em) and territorial. Typically, any fights that might
break out, are between two females trying to "defend" their place in the pack.
Females also tend to be the ones that show more dominant behaviours such as the ever popular "humping".
While an obvious conversation starter, it really isn't a desirable thing to have going on in the middle of your family
bar-b-que. When a male puppy is neutered before reaching sexual maturity (usually before 6 months old), this behaviour, as
well as "marking", tend never to even develop. Something else most people don't realize is an un-altered female
will also mark, just not in an as obvious manner as a male. Neutering a male dog is also quite a bit less expensive (and
certainly less evasive) than spaying a female is. That is a huge plus in today's economic situation!
Male dogs also tend to be "cuddle bugs", are more outgoing and seem to be more
"eager to please" than the females. While sitting outside, my girls will run up, love on me, and then they are off
again to inspect the yard, all in a matter of seconds. The boys, however, tend to be the ones that hang around my feet and
wait for me to sit so they can claim their spot in my lap. When housebreaking, my boys have all taken to it faster than
the girls. I'm not sure why this is but I've asked around and other people seem to agree, the boys just catch on faster.
I hope this added information will help in your decision when considering purchasing a new puppy for your
family! Feel free to email me for any other information you might need!
